General Transcription Speed and Accuracy

Excellent command of the English language, grammar, spelling, and punctuation are important skills that are required for general transcription work.

You must type correctly what you hear! A transcript needs to match the dictation and have correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. If your grammar or punctuation needs improvement, you should take a course.

There is not much room for error. Transcription needs to be 95 to 100% error free. Most companies expect 98% error-free transcripts. This means there should be 2% or less errors. While many transcription companies use editors to verify their transcriptionists’ work, you won’t keep your transcription job very long if they find more than 2% errors.

Watch out for sound-alikes and common grammatical errors like it’s and its; there vs they’re; you're and your; for and four; their, they're and there. Those words are pronounced the same, are all spelled correctly but have different meanings. A SpellChecker won’t know if you mistakenly typed “their” instead of “they’re” or there because all three words exists. That’s why you cannot rely solely on a SpellChecker and need to proofread transcripts before submitting them.

Verbatim transcription requires transcriptionists to transcribe exactly as dictated word for work while semi-verbatim transcription lets the transcriptionist correct punctuation, misspellings and dictation errors at their discretion.

Features such as autocomplete and autoreplace will speed up typing and prevent or correct typing errors.

Focus on typing without errors. An accurate transcript is more important than transcription speed.

Purpose of Transcribing Seminars, Teleseminars and Webinars

Why have your teleseminars, webinars or seminars transcribed?

Why have your teleseminar or webinar transcribed? Well, you can do a number of things with a transcript.

If they had offered me a written copy of the material I could have read it in chunks as I had the time.

Also remember, some people are just not audio learners and do much better if they are able to read it themselves and digest the information at their own pace. It's always best to offer both the option of an audio clip and a transcript, if at all possible.

Verbatim Transcription
What is verbatim transcription?
The word “Verbatim” comes from the Latin verbum and means “in the same words.” Verbatim transcription means transcribing exactly what is said without correcting grammar, punctuation, or content.
Verbatim transcription transcribes every word. It transcribes false starts to sentences, stutters and redundant words like “uh,” “you know.”
If you’re outsourcing transcription work, it’s important that you understand what verbatim transcription means. If you don’t want the transcriptionist to put every recorded ‘uh,’ ‘ah,’ ‘oh’ and ‘um’ in a transcript, you should consider semi-verbatim transcription.

Verbatim transcription takes longer to transcribe because there are more characters to type. Most transcription clients don’t want verbatim transcription because it’s more difficult to transcribe and more difficult to read. But there are situations where a verbatim transcript is required - often for legal reasons.

Semi-Verbatim Transcription
Semi-verbatim transcription transcribes phrasing and sentence structure exactly but it cleans up stutters and false starts, making the transcript easier to read. This is the most popular kind of transcription.

Edited Transcription
People do not speak in grammatically-correct sentences. Edited transcription captures the flavor of what’s said, while producing a document that is publication-ready.

Edited transcripts are popular with authors because an they allow the author to cut and paste quotes in their book or article.
