Is Voice Recognition Replacing Transcription and Transcribers?

Some doctors and medical institutions are using voice recognition systems and electronic medical records but there is still plenty of work in medical transcription.

Voice recognition technology is not completely accurate and definitely not accurate enough for transcription. This creates additional positions for medical editors. Some of the transcribing jobs turn into transcription editing jobs.

Many doctors and business owners don’t want to take the time to learn and train the voice recognition software.

Automatic voice recognition software doesn’t work if there is more than one voice which means that voice recognition software won’t work to transcribe interviews and group recordings.

In addition to medical transcription jobs, there is also plenty of work for general and business transcription.

Searching For Transcription Jobs Online

Transcription work from home is expected to continue to grow over
the next 10 years and plenty of jobs are available.

By transcribing audio recordings and converting audio files into
written documents, transcriptionists help businesses and
organizations with the efficient handling of information, files and
records.

Transcriptionists are known by various titles, including transcribers,
audio transcribers, audio transcriptionists, MTs, LTs, GTs,
transcription services, transcription companies, word processors,
typists, data entry processor, electronic data processors, and
keypunch technicians.

When doing searches online through search engines, you’re using
databases. Search engines search enormous databases of Web
pages, using titles, keywords or text.

You can maximize the potential of search engines by learning how
they work and how to use them quickly and effectively. Check out
the advanced search options. If you’re not familiar with them, look
for tutorials on how to do internet research. Check the "Help"
function of the particular search engine you're using, since they are
all a little different.

Using targeted keywords will give you the best results for your
online searches. Submitting one or two keywords per search is not
enough for an effective query. Using three or four carefully chosen
keywords, preferably nouns, will yield better search results. For
example, if you’re looking for “transcription” or “transcribing,” you’ll
get general information. If you’re looking for general transcription
jobs, interview transcription jobs, or focus group transcription, you’ll
get more targeted results. For even more targeted results, use
“quotes” at the beginning and end of your key phrase.

I compiled a listing of keywords from job descriptions. Use those
keywords when searching for the kind of transcription work you want
to do.

The variations of keywords are important. You might get different
search results when searching for “interview transcription,” “interview
transcriber,” or “interview transcript job.”

Job postings may mention specific job titles that indicate the type
of transcription work such as general transcriptionist, medical
transcriptionist, legal transcriptionist, English transcriptionist and
Spanish transcriptionist.

Or they may refer to the type of transcription work such as general
transcription work, medical transcription work and legal transcription
work.

The term “transcriptionist jobs” often includes contract work,
freelance transcription, and part-time and full-time transcription work
from home. Search Google for general transcription jobs, medical
transcription jobs or legal transcription jobs, depending on the type
of transcription job you’re looking for.

Some transcription job postings mention the qualifications in the job
title. Examples include professional transcriber, transcriber with
financial transcription experience, transcriptionist with legal
experience, pathology medical transcriptionist, oncology
transcriptionist, English transcription, Spanish transcription, and
Italian transcription.

Some job postings are specific to the type of transcription work
they want you to do such as transcribe interviews, transcription of an
interview, transcriptions of audio MP3 interviews, transcribe MP3,
transcribe audio content, transcription of training audio, audio
transcription of training class, transcribing digital tape recordings
from meetings, transcription of market research phone interviews,
transcribe a website video, transcripts from video, transcribe radio
shows, transcription from iPhone voice memo audio files, transcribe
medical recordings, on-call transcriber needed for periodic overflow
work, and transcribe English speech files.

Internet research skills will come in very handy to research terms
you’ll encounter during transcription. Good luck in your search for
transcription jobs from home!

What Is The Difference Between Transcription And Translation And Replication?

When doing a Google search for transcription, I was looking for information about transcription work. I was wondering why I was sometimes getting search results about DNA.

I didn’t realize that transcription had several meanings. To me, transcription means typing what’s recorded.

To confuse me even more, some people were asking what the difference was between “transcription” and “translation.” I thought everyone knew that transcription work involves typing from a recording and translation work means translating from one language to another.

After doing some research, I found out that there are other meanings which explained the search results.

I don’t want to get too technical here, so here’s a simple explanation.

RNA transcription is the process of DNA being read and RNA being made based on a particular DNA strand. It involves the production of an mRNA molecule. The process starts after the two strands of a DNA molecule separate and then one of the strands becomes a pattern for an mRNA molecule. The individual molecular strands then link together to form a strand of mRNA. RNA transcription is the production or synthesis of RNA encoded by DNA. So DNA sequences are read to produce mRNA transcripts.

DNA replication is the process by which one double helix of DNA is duplicated into two identical double helices which are also identical to the mother DNA.

Translation is taking the RNA just made and using it to make a protein. Translation takes place after transcription of the genetic code into mRNA has been started. Translation refers to protein synthesis, in which proteins are made by reading the sequence information after the mature and processed mRNA by a ribosome.

To me, transcription still refers to transcribing from a recording. But I thought you might want to find out why you’re getting some DNA information when doing research about transcription.

Free general transcription software

Are you wondering what transcription software is available for general transcription work? Are you confused or intimidated by all transcription software and don’t know where to start?

Don't be. Once you get the hang of it, it’s actually pretty easy.

There are several good transcription programs you can download for free.

After downloading and installing the transcription software and receiving an audio file, the software will recognize the digital file and the transcriptionist can open the file, hear the recording and transcribe it. Digital files are as easy to work with as the old cassette transcribers.

A footpedal and headset will increase transcription speed but you can use the hotkeys in the transcription program until you make enough money to buy the pedal and headset.

Here are some popular transcription software choices.

Free Transcription software for audio.
Free
Express Scribe transcription software
Express Scribe (free) is one of the most popular transcription software choices and works well to listen to audio files. You can use the keyboard to start and stop, slow and speed up. The free Express Scribe transcription software provides multi-channel control and file management.

Start Stop Universal transcription system
Start Stop Universal transcription system has features that include bookmarks, time stamping and more. The job manager can sort dictation by author, job type, time, length and more.
I also recommend start stop universal and the new start stop power play software. The software is built in, so you don’t need to use any other software with it.

ForTheRecord (FTR) The Record Player
http://www.fortherecord.com
Free
ForTheRecord is a transcription program that is specialized in legal transcription such as legal proceedings and is used by legal transcriptionists. FTR solutions are custom designed to meet the specific needs of the court industry.
Other popular transcription software is FTR Gold and FTR's The Record Player allows you to do video timecoding.

General Transcription Speed and Accuracy

Excellent command of the English language, grammar, spelling, and punctuation are important skills that are required for general transcription work.

You must type correctly what you hear! A transcript needs to match the dictation and have correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. If your grammar or punctuation needs improvement, you should take a course.

There is not much room for error. Transcription needs to be 95 to 100% error free. Most companies expect 98% error-free transcripts. This means there should be 2% or less errors. While many transcription companies use editors to verify their transcriptionists’ work, you won’t keep your transcription job very long if they find more than 2% errors.

Watch out for sound-alikes and common grammatical errors like it’s and its; there vs they’re; you're and your; for and four; their, they're and there. Those words are pronounced the same, are all spelled correctly but have different meanings. A SpellChecker won’t know if you mistakenly typed “their” instead of “they’re” or there because all three words exists. That’s why you cannot rely solely on a SpellChecker and need to proofread transcripts before submitting them.

Verbatim transcription requires transcriptionists to transcribe exactly as dictated word for work while semi-verbatim transcription lets the transcriptionist correct punctuation, misspellings and dictation errors at their discretion.

Features such as autocomplete and autoreplace will speed up typing and prevent or correct typing errors.

Focus on typing without errors. An accurate transcript is more important than transcription speed.

Purpose of Transcribing Seminars, Teleseminars and Webinars

Why have your teleseminars, webinars or seminars transcribed?

Why have your teleseminar or webinar transcribed? Well, you can do a number of things with a transcript.

You can easily use portions of the transcript for a free report you may want to give away to potential clients. Or you may want to turn the transcript into an e-book to sell. This could pay for the cost of the transcription services possibly in a single sale of the e-book, depending on the price of the e-book and the length of the teleseminar.

Another reason to get your event transcribed is to possibly use portions on your website, which would allow the search engines to grab up any keywords in the text that they wouldn't find in the audio. This will only help you in getting your website ranked higher for your specific keywords.

Something else to keep in mind is that many people would much rather read a transcript than listen to an audio clip on your website. It is time consuming to sit in front of your computer while listening to a 30 to 60 minute audio, when you could curl up on your couch with a copy of a transcript of the same thing and read it at your leisure. I know I have bypassed listening to an audio just because I wouldn't have time to finish listening to it. If they had offered me a written copy of the material I could have read it in chunks as I had the time.

Also remember, some people are just not audio learners and do much better if they are able to read it themselves and digest the information at their own pace. It's always best to offer both the option of an audio clip and a transcript, if at all possible.

Promote General Transcription Business with Promotional Letters

Do you want general transcription work from home?

Sending out promotional letters is an effective way to promote your general transcription services. A promotional letter is a sales letter introducing and selling your services.

You can use promotional letters to introduce your services to prospective clients and to remind existing clients about your services. You can use them to introduce new services and special offers.

The first step to having a successful mailing campaign is to target your prospective customers.

Determine what type of transcription work you want and then compile a list of the types of clients you want to work with that will give you the transcription work from home you want. Compile a list of prospects that are within a 5 mile radius. For example, if you want to transcribe one-person dictation, contact authors. If you like to transcribe meeting minutes, contact associations.

How should you write a promotional letter?

Of course, you want to make it clear that you’re offering general transcription services and describe your services. Mention your qualification to do general transcription work for them and mention what sets you apart from other general transcriptionists. Do you provide better quality transcripts with the highest accuracy? Do you offer faster transcription turnaround?

Get their attention with a benefit-oriented headline that targets your customers. Don’t make it look like you’re sending the same letter to everyone. Personalize the letter or at least make it look like it’s personalized. Do your research. Make an attempt to get the name of the decision maker and address the person by name.

Mention their industry and mention that you’re experienced with doing transcription for their industry or that you’re specialized in transcription for their industry. If you have any specialized knowledge or skills that will benefit them, mention so.

Tell them what benefits they’ll get from using your general transcription services and why they should outsource work instead of doing it in-house or attempting to transcribe it themselves.

You want the letter to look professional and inviting with a friendly tone. And of course, it should be error free.

Giving an incentive to use your transcription services will increase your response dramatically. An effective promotion technique is to do a short transcript for a new client free or offer your first transcription job at a discounted rate. This is a good way to prove that you can do the job. You can limit the free work to a certain amount of audio minutes.

Mail consistently. Success from any kind of marketing depends on repetition. Your promotional mailings will be even more effective if you follow up with a phone call a few days of sending it out.

A promotional letter is one of the most important tools of making your prospective clients aware of your transcription services. Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of promotional letters to get general transcription work from home.

Verbatim Transcription – Semi-Verbatim Transcription and Edited Transcription

Types of transcription
Transcription can be verbatim transcription, semi-verbatim transcription or edited transcription.

Verbatim Transcription
What is verbatim transcription?
The word “Verbatim” comes from the Latin verbum and means “in the same words.” Verbatim transcription means transcribing exactly what is said without correcting grammar, punctuation, or content.
Verbatim transcription transcribes every word. It transcribes false starts to sentences, stutters and redundant words like “uh,” “you know.”
If you’re outsourcing transcription work, it’s important that you understand what verbatim transcription means. If you don’t want the transcriptionist to put every recorded ‘uh,’ ‘ah,’ ‘oh’ and ‘um’ in a transcript, you should consider semi-verbatim transcription.

Verbatim transcription takes longer to transcribe because there are more characters to type. Most transcription clients don’t want verbatim transcription because it’s more difficult to transcribe and more difficult to read. But there are situations where a verbatim transcript is required - often for legal reasons.

Semi-Verbatim Transcription
Semi-verbatim transcription transcribes phrasing and sentence structure exactly but it cleans up stutters and false starts, making the transcript easier to read. This is the most popular kind of transcription.

Edited Transcription
People do not speak in grammatically-correct sentences. Edited transcription captures the flavor of what’s said, while producing a document that is publication-ready.

Edited transcripts are popular with authors because an they allow the author to cut and paste quotes in their book or article.

Summary:
While semi-verbatim transcription lets the transcriptionist correct punctuation, misspellings and dictation errors at their discretion, verbatim transcription requires transcriptionists to transcribe exactly as dictated. How a transcriptionist will transcribe an audio usually depends on the client’s preferences. If a client doesn’t want his words changed, the transcriptionist needs to transcribe word-for-word.
