If you've considered a career in medical transcription, you've probably already spent at least some time looking into the study options. And there are some serious decisions to be made when it comes to those training options. Should you study medical transcription in a classroom? Or would an online or correspondence course be better? It depends on your personality, your location and your needs.

Start by looking into schools in your area that offer medical transcription in a classroom setting. The sheer fact of your location in relation to any schools you'd be interested in attending may very well make the decision for you. While location is sometimes the deciding factor, don't let yourself be talked into taking what you consider to be second-rate medical transcription training just because it happens to be nearby. You can certainly get quality training from an online or correspondence school if there's nothing close to your location.

Your own personality - and limitations - should also play a role in your choice of training options. Do you work well without strict supervision and deadlines? Can you set goals for yourself and follow through? If your answer to those questions isn't a resounding "yes," you may not do well with online or correspondence training. There's a big difference between sitting in a classroom every day (or once a week) and being turned loose to do your own work. In a classroom, you're held responsible for keeping pace with the class. A correspondence class allows you to set your own pace. Some people simply need the structure of a classroom setting.

That's not to say that you have to attend classes in person to get that structure. Many distance learning programs allow students to "meet" with instructors and even classmates on a regular basis via computer. You simply set up a webcam at your location and you have the opportunity to interact with the teacher and even others taking the class. In some ways, this is the best of all possible worlds for the busy adult who still needs some structure to accomplish the goals of medical transcription training.

If you think the online "meeting" is a good idea for you, take a minute to look at your own computer and your connection. A dial-up connection with a slow computer may simply not be able to present the class in "real time." The lag can be annoying or even embarrassing, and you may find yourself losing out on some important points.

Regardless of what kind of training you choose, be wary of those offering claims that seem simply too good to be true. No one can guarantee that you'll find a job the week you complete your training and a school that offers those kinds of promises may very well be exaggerating other points of their training as well. How to Choose the Right Medical Transcription Training Program

When it comes to choosing the best Medical Transcription training program for oneself, it can be a very confusing a frustrating experience.

How do you know what a quality program and school looks like? There are so many advertisements out there and they all look great and promise great things. One of the things we really don't want to do is to pick a school that, when we go looking for that first job, turns out not to be one that the transcription employers look favorably on!

So how to choose?

Here are some guidelines you can use to help ensure you are picking the right training program for yourself. These guidelines are recommended by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI):

1. The program should be taught by qualified instructors who are credentialed experts in their respective fields.

2. The program should employ certified medical transcriptionists to teach medical transcription practice courses.

The experienced pros will be able to give you all kinds of assistance and show you tips and tricks that someone who has merely studied cannot.

3. The program should indicate the number of classroom hours students actually perform medical transcription.

4. The program should indicate the number of minutes of actual physician dictation used for practice (The Model Curriculum recommends 30 dictated hours of actual physician dictation.)
It is all right to start out with dictation not done by physicians for getting a feel for it, but you MUST have actual physician-dictated material to work with, or you will be lost when you get in the real world!

5. Will the school provide names and addresses of former students as references?
Contact them. Find out what they liked, and didn't like.

6. Does the school have an advisory board? Does it include certified medical transcriptionists?

7. The program should indicate length of externship or on-the-job experience available (The Model Curriculum recommends 10 dictated hours of authentic physician dictation, for a total of 40 dictated hours during the training program.)

8. It should include relevant publications among its educational materials.

9. The school should use the AAMT Book of Style for Medical Transcription, 2nd edition in its training curriculum.

10. The program should be based on The Model Curriculum for Medical Transcription*, 3rd edition, published by AHDI, which recommends courses in the following:

* English grammar and punctuation * Medical language * Anatomy and physiology * Disease processes * Pharmacology and laboratory medicine * Transcription technology * Medical transcription practice * Healthcare records

11. Privacy, ethics, and other medicolegal issues

12. Lastly, the school should offer job placement assistance.

Medical Transcription Spelling

As a professional medical transcriptionist, the ability to spell is crucial to your success. Spelling errors will hold you back in terms of raises, and also in getting your work done in a timely and efficient manner.

Do you know the difference between "their", "there" and "they're"? How about "effect" and "affect", or "its" and "it's"? Many people don't really catch the differences between these words when they see them, but your editor will, you can bet on it.

A spell check program will help you a great deal, but it won't catch the situations above, and there will be many words or phrases not included which are unique to the medical field. Even a medical spell check program will not include every word you come across.

The medical field changes every day and you must take the responsibility to keep your skills up. Again, you must know when to override the spell check program's recommendations.

And do not depend on the doctor's spelling. They will frequently not know they do not know the proper spelling of a word. They will often make up their own words, words that become a part of their vernacular and you must decide the appropriate and consistent way to spell this word or phrase. Often the other doctors who work with this person will pick this term up and start using it as well. Soon it is in hospital-wide use and is essentially a made-up word.

Until you are able to transcribe a report in which there are no spelling errors, you will never advance out of having your work checked through the quality assurance (QA) department. And until you advance out of QA, you will not reach your full earning potential.

This cannot be stressed enough: You must have excellent spelling skills. If you feel you are lacking in this department, contact your local school district or community college for adult continuing education classes to help with weak spelling skills. The classes may be free of charge or have a nominal fee attached. If you feel you cannot afford this, the library is also an excellent resource.

One tool that can be of great assistance to you is a shorthand program. Most word processors these days come with a built-in autocorrect feature that you can add those long medical terms to, and also shortcuts for whole phrases and sentences that physicians tend to use over and over. Medical Transcriptionist's Salary - How Much Does an MT Really Earn?

Confused over transcription salaries. Need to know the truth, right! Well then, here is the truth.
One will be amazed at the complexities and range of what a transcriptionist usually earns, be it a medical transcriptionist, court transcriptionist, data transcriptionist or legal transcriptionist. Their salaries fluctuate widely and it is sometimes difficult to estimate their salaries and earnings. However, a general estimate can be drawn regarding the starting wages and earnings and the maximum to which they can earn.

As per US, Department of Labour statistics, medical transcriptionists median hourly earnings were $14.40 in May 2006. The average medical transcription earnings ranged from $12.17 to $17.06. The lowest earnings were around $10.22 per hour, and the highest earnings were even more than $20.15 per hour.

Some of the median hourly earnings as per different industries employing medical transcriptionists were; diagnostic laboratories $15.68, hospitals $14.62, MT business companies $14.34, outpatient centers $14.31, physician offices $14.00 per hour. Therefore, average wage for a medical transcriptionist should be around $13 an hour on the low side to around $20 on the higher side.

A new, inexperienced transcriptionist should ideally start around $9 an hour and as the experience and production quantity grows, earnings go anywhere from $14 to $20 an hour. Compensation methods for medical transcriptionists usually vary a lot. Some are paid based on the number of hours while some are paid on the number of lines they transcribe, usually 65 characters with spaces constitutes 1 line. Transcription companies usually pay around 8-10 cents per line for transcription and 3-4 cents per line for editing.

Companies are now switching over to speech recognition services for transcribing voice files. However, they still need to get such voice recognized-transcribed files edited. For such work, the current trend of payment is 3-5 cents per line. However, one may calculate, the median hourly earnings come to around $13 to $20 and as said earlier, it depends also on the speed and contractual payment per line.

Under standard working conditions of 40 hours per week, an average transcriptionist should estimate his earnings from 40 (hours) x 52.17 (number of weeks in a year) x $13 = $27,128 annually (lower range) to 40 x 52.17 x 20 = $41,736 annually (higher range).
Does this amount look a lot smaller then what you had expected? Well, it is smaller but this is an approximation. There are transcriptionists who definitely earn more than this but it all depends on how many hours one works, production speed and the payment per line. With few years of experience, many of them easily scale up to $50,000 annually. Coupled with this for those who work from home, comes the comfort of working from home, being able to take care of your children and other stuffs, and spending more quality time with your family. When you add up all, this career does provide a higher earning potential along with a satisfactory, stress-free, enjoyable life.

Some of us would still not be happy at these figures and for those some of them, entering in to transcription business is an ideal choice. Transcription business can certainly load you heftily with money to the tune where it will defy your imagination. So, I won't speculate on that.
Now let's take a look at the salaries earned out of US, especially in India where now most of the outsourcing is going to. A new, relatively inexperienced transcriptionist in India usually starts around 7000/- Rupees a month. With a year of experience, they usually reach 10,000 to 12,000 rupees a month. However, the higher earners are usually the proof-readers and the editors. Proof-readers make a decent amount ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 rupees a month with the editor making most of it from anywhere between 20,000 to 35,000 rupees a month.

So, all in all, medical transcription does pay good though not big but it certainly provides a good lifestyle for those contemplating to work from home.
